This is what I wanted to do after finishing my presentation. But no, back to work! Capybaras may look like they sleep all the time, but that's actually the result of observation bias. They only slow down enough to get good pictures when they are eating or sleeping!

On Sunday, I spent about 45 minutes with my fiancee staring at this wonderful capybara, face to face, almost nose-to-nose! People would come up and express surprise and shock at the giant rodent. "Is it a rat, mommy?" "No, dear, it's a ca-pee-bah-rahh?" That sort of thing. Thankfully, we were able to correct many of the visitors' misconceptions about the most wonderful of all creatures. I think the zoo should hire us to give capybara lectures.

Life has been challenging for the capybara that runs this blog lately, between trying to plan a wedding with his fiancee, finishing his last term of classes (ever!), and working on his PhD thesis. But thankfully, a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo with remind him what is really important -- his fellow capybaras.

The zoo was wonderful and I encourage you to check out all of the photos -- none are as wonderful as the capybara, of course, but many come close!

On Friday night, my fiancee and I ended up being out with friends, eagerly anticipating Caplin's television debut. But unfortunately, we arrived home having JUST MISSED HIM! Depressed, we decided to wait up for the 1:00 am showing... but of course fell asleep. Sadness overtook us as we went back to bed...

At 4:58 am for some reason I'm not clear on, I woke up! Oh my gosh, Caplin's show is on again at 5 am! So fiancee and I rushed out of the room, turned on the TV, and saw the most wonderful sight ever -- Caplin, and his person, on TV! It was ten minutes of pre-dawn happiness for us. I'm sure glad my brain somehow knew to wake up just then. To celebrate, here is a lovely late-night photo of two capybaras, enjoing a snack!

As spring break draws to a close, I hope you have enjoyed the week (Well, sorta two) of Caplin Rous, the Internet's most lovable capybara. Caplin Rous will be on Animal Planet, April 11th 10:00 pm ET. I have friends from out of town visiting just so we can watch this historic event. We'll return next week with more wonderful capybara photos, but this is not the last you'll see of Caplin -- I'm sure there will be more adorable photos of him in the future!

This is a photo taken by my fiancee of the capybaras at High Park Zoo in Toronto, for a wonderful weekend visit. She lives in Toronto (and has for nearly three years!) and I still live in Boston. We get to see one another very rarely, but when we do we share our love of capybaras. This is the only capybara I have ever seen in person!

Several people have commented on the size of the noble capybara. It's difficult to appreciate just how hugely wonderful they are until you see one next to an adult human. A robust capybara can grow to 140 pounds... That's a lot of animal to love!

Frequently you will see pictures of the noble Capybara with a bird of some sort sitting on him or her. The purpose of this bird is still a mystery to capybaraologists. Are they there to pick off bugs? Defend the Capybara from other animals? Help the capybara avoid entering into unfavorable legal transactions? I like to think that they are protector birds, and do all of the above.
